Can I have a chaperone in my appointment?

A chaperone is someone who accompanies and looks after a patient whilst at the same time supervises the doctor. They are important in situations where an intimate examination is required. You may wish to have a chaperone present for example if a doctor has to examine the genitals, bottom or breast. The chaperone will make sure that you are comfortable and alright during the procedure. They will also make sure that the procedure is being performed as it should be. In essence, they protect both you and the doctor.

Any patient is entitled to have a chaperone present for any consultation. If you would prefer a chaperone to be present for a consultation or examination it is helpful to us if you request this at the time of booking, or when you speak to your GP, so that we can make sure a trained chaperone is available. The chaperone may be one of our practice nurses or healthcare assistants, or a member of our reception staff who has been fully trained for this role. If the person who acts as the chaperone is someone you would rather not have, please let us know and we can get someone else instead.
